Hi.

Half-of-me

Hello there, my name's Liam Morley. I enjoy cycling, rock climbing, hiking, and ultimate frisbee. I've been playing the piano for over two-thirds of my life, sometimes professionally, and I'm a singer/songwriter who has been in a band or two. I don't believe in scratch tickets, I have a poor sense of smell, and my culinary skills could use improvement. I once won second prize and $50 in a writing contest.

But maybe what you really want to know is, can I code, can I design, can I Get Things Done. And I'm here to tell you that the answers to those questions are yes, yes, and yes. Some of my work has been referred to as “the best software I've seen written by a student” (Gary Pollice, my senior project advisor, speaking to prospective WPI students and their parents). A BAE project to which I was a major contributor was praised as looking more like a $3,000,000 project than a project actually costing only $3,000.

When I'm not in class, I'm a freelance web developer, working mostly with Java and Ruby on Rails. This site was built in Rails; I've built many others, as well as plugins for both Rails and Merb apps. I know my way around a Rails application, and I'm a regular contributor to the open source community.

I'm an avid practitioner of modern software engineering paradigms such as extreme programming and agile methods, when and where appropriate. I prefer user stories and slim use cases to wordy requirements docs, and I'm an ardent fan of test-driven development. I appreciate clean software design and an architecture that is built for the sole purpose of meeting the requirements for which the software is built.

I currently live in Worcester, Massachusetts, just down the street from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, at which I am a full-time student, graduating this May. I'm very excited about what the future holds.
